Materials

  • sidewalk chalk
  • sidewalk or outdoor blacktop
  • clock or watch

Procedure

  1. Select an outdoor flat paved surface away from any shade.
  2. Mark this spot by outlining the student’s feet with the sidewalk chalk.
  3. On the sidewalk, outline the student’s entire shadow and note the time.
  4. Every hour, have the student place his/her feet in the same place as outlined earlier in the day. Trace around the shadow and again note the time. For younger students it is recommended to do each shadow drawing on the hour, such as 8:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m. and so on.
  5. Toward the end of the day, have the student look at the shadow tracings and discuss how the shadows moved in relation to the sun.
  6. Ask the students, When was the shadow the longest? The shortest? Is this a way to tell time?
