Solar Sisters

Hello, we’re The Solar Sisters, and we are in 4th grade at Ocean Breeze Elementary School. We are best friends and wanted to do a solar oven together, and therefore named our team the Solar Sisters. All of our dishes are made with Florida fresh ingredients. The members of our team are Camdyn P, Willow S, and Aria T.

These are pictures of our solar oven days 1-2.

Our 2nd time checking the oven, we added a seal so the plastic lid on our oven doesn’t slide down, here are the pictures.

The first thing we did after we decided to become a team is we made our reflective backboard. We got an old science fair board and taped silver reflection tape on the panels. The the backboard will attract sun light and reflect that sun light that it collects into the solar oven. Next we started working on the inside of our solar oven. Once we found a perfect box we painted it with black heat paint. After we painted we decided we were going to tape silver panels on the flaps to redirect the sun .Next we installed foam insulation by taping it to our inside of the box. Then we asked our teacher, Mrs. Mentillo to cut us a piece of plexi glass to go over the top of the solar oven. We also applied a seal to keep the lid tight and from slipping. Lastly we painted the outside of our box to make it beautiful..

We painted panels for the inside using black paint that is ok for heat. Black will help absorb heat and make the oven hotter.

The materials that we used were silver reflection tape, cardboard panel, a cardboard box, foam, black heat paint, decorative paint, plexi glass, seal, and a cooking pan.

Here is a description of the delicious Florida fresh food we will be making and serving to the judges.
