Old School Contraption

TEAM NAME: Old School

SCHOOL NAME: Ocean Breeze Elementary

TEAM: Rylee, Peyton, Summer, Brody, River, Max

GRADE LEVEL FOR EACH TEAM MEMBER: 5th (for all team members)

Due to Covid, we had to work only at our own desks. We made our contraptions to start with a pulled string and end with a string for the next contraption. We linked out desktop contraptions with string. We call our team “Old School” as our theme was old time games. Our task is to ring a bell.

NAME: Rylee, DIVISION: 5th, PROJECT NAME: Old Arcade. THIS IS WILL RING OUR BELL
DIVISION: 5th, PROJECT NAME: Plants vs Zombies, NAME: Peyton
DIVISION: 5th, PROJECT NAME: Sonic, NAME: Max
DIVISION: 5th, PROJECT NAME: Mario, NAME: Brody – He is our starter
DIVISION: 5th, PROJECT NAME: Mrs PacMan, NAME: River
DIVISION:5th, PROJECT NAME: PacMan, NAME: Summer

Here we explained each contraption: Please watch this video. https://youtu.be/4BdRhGU9M9Q

We tried our hardest. It was very frustrating. We counted 138 videos. We wanted to share 2 of them with you. Video #1 (bell hit) Please watch video here: https://youtu.be/0UNCjXEfJkQ. Video #2 (all transfers except the bell) Please watch here https://youtu.be/Z0Oxq4hs9gY

Thank you for watching! The Old School Team

  • That is so amazing! It’s got me wondering how long it took to build!

  • Terrific job! That was an excellent way to build a complex machine and still work only at your own desks. My favorite run was the one where all the steps worked except the last. I imagine each student being responsible for a specific section of the machine led to some internal competition to see who can outdo each other, but not go too over the top otherwise you will be the source of a failed run.

  • I love the way you created separate ‘modules’ on your desks and then linked them together. Very clever! Each desk top shows a bit of the personality of the creator and different methods to transfer the energy across one desk and to the next. The result is an interesting, fast moving machine with so many energy transfers that I lost count! Great job!

  • I really enjoyed watching how you overcame the challenge of having to work separately. It shows great resourcefulness and ingenuity! Your machine was creative and complicated which I appreciate as well. Great work!

  • Wow! Your ability to design individual components and interfacing them is invaluable. You’ve shown us what it takes to work as a team in difficult circumstances to meet objectives without sacrificing team members safety. Your choice of materials for the project indicates creativity and resourcefulness. You’ve displayed enviable character traits of exceptional team work and cooperation; the measure of great science. Good luck in your scientific inquiry and keep up the good work!
